・スイスイ英語の部

1月8日(木)に第2回「スイスイ英語」をカラオケ館銀座総本店で開催しました。６名参加。

今回持ち寄ったトピックは北欧の椅子デザイナー ハンス・ウェグナー展、ヨーガ教室、ラフカディオ・ハーン、KG高等部ラグビー部全国大会、トランプ政治およびAI上司などについて英語と日本語でメンバー各自が話をしました。話題豊富でした。

その後、各自気持ちよく持ち歌を歌い切り、午後４時半頃までみんなで楽しみました。

1月24日(土)にGoogle Meetによるオンラインにて開催。３名参加。

教材の記事：Why the surprise over Trump’s Venezuela coup?

 US presidents promise isolation – and deliver war

世界が混乱に向かって進みつつあることを告げるような年明けのアメリカによるベネズエラへの襲撃。この事件は驚くだけでは済まされない事態であることから今月の教材をThe Guardian（英国の新聞） からの記事を選びました。これは今回の襲撃の当事国のアメリカではない国からの評論の方が正しい視点を探るのにふさわしいとの見方です。

記事の章のくくりは以下となっていました。

  • カラカス事件と一人よがりの根拠（manifest destiny 明白な天命)
  • 米国の孤立主義の実績は法無視の戦争だった。
  • 米国は大戦後の数々の侵略を繰り返したが失敗であり、いずれも成功していない。
  • トランプはドンロー主義で過去と同じことをやって失敗に終わるのか、違うのか。

第１部

パート別に各担当者が音読し、日本語訳、続いて他に興味深い英文・英語があれば相互に意見交換しました。

第２部

関して各自が意見を述べ、その後フリートークを行いました。

【設問】

A：今回のアメリカによる身勝手極まるマドゥロ　ベネズエラ大統領の逮捕劇は

  • アメリカにとっての成功でしょうか、失敗でしょうか。それはなぜですか。
  • トランプ大統領にとって成功でしょうか。失敗でしょうか。それはなぜですか。

B:今後一年間ほどで、アメリカを含めて世界はどう変化するでしょう？

参加者の間では襲撃は失敗、成功、判定不明と多様な意見を見ました。

また、向こう一年間の変化の見通しについては、米国は地盤沈下し凋落。中国は益々台頭し世界覇権国への地保を固めるという共通認識を得ました。

以下、提示された意見の抜粋

①It was a failure for America.

Past wars by US, EU, ended with failure except World War II’ Japan case and Cuban Missiles Crisis.　It has become clear that Manifest Destiny in US was not applicable!  It was not successful to adopt strategy based on Manifest Destiny ignoring national conditions of other country.

Soviet, Nato, USA has intervened in the wars so far but they didn’t succeed.  It is because they did not get into involved people’s life and society full of complexity, and did not understand the people themselves.   It was true that the interveners know the modern management system of the government but they did not know how to install the system and to adjust it to the society of the country they intervened. Trumps’s present undergoing change is to be continued even if the next president is elected. Namely, Don-roe strategy and MAGA-ism will become more influential to US defense strategy and domestic policies.

②It is impossible to say at this stage of the happenings even just commenting and predicting how the situation would turn out in a long run of the international community. The only thing I can talk about now is that it is a great pity for us that we have Mr. Trump as the President of the Unite State of America. He is the type to think of himself first about whatever he does as the President of the Unites States of America. He looks like a “me first”type to take credit for whatever he does on the earth. “Revolution of commonsense” is recklessly running and international orders, established in the 80 years after the World War Two, are now being destroyed one by one. It looks as if a dynasty is governing the U.S. society. Yes, if the present situation should continue, the world may gradually proceed to a lawless area without rules. It is a pity that our country will not be in a position to play the major or initiative role.

③It’s almost certain that America will lead “change”, and deliver the effects all over the world. In the U.S. over 90% of Republican supporters still approve Trump Administration even now, while near 90% of Democratic Party oppose it. This indicates the definitive division in U.S. Will it reverse after Trump? America which has been deeply divided and opposed each other, will not come apart yet in a year from now. Nonetheless the internal disarray will intensify and debilitation will be inevitable. Once decline becomes visible, all the countries except America which Trump reigns in will see America as nothing but a mere rogue country with only military might without a reminiscence of the past hegemonic country. People will sell dollar and capital money will stampede. The world will be animalized and more confused. China will become a nation of substantial hegemony while sitting quiet.
