３月度も引き続きDMM英会話のデイリーニュースを読み解きました。
表題は４５％ of World’s Flowering Plants at Risk of Extinction
I 記事の要点・・・地球上の薬の原料が半分に減る！！！
世界に知られた花の咲く植物のうち４５％は消滅の危機にあるという研究報告の紹介でした。これは、花の咲く植物が無くなるだけでなく、実は将来の薬が無くなるということがより深刻な問題であるという指摘です。というのも、現在の医薬の１０中９は植物由来であるからです。現在調査済の花の咲く植物（維管束植物）は ３０万種ありますが、他に１０万種は未調査だと推定されています。それらを含めて維管束植物が消滅することになると、今後医学に貢献するであろう植物も薬効を発見する前に消滅してしまうことになります。
II 読後の新たな気づき
1.薬の歴史は？祈祷師や宗教と並走？？
古来薬学と医学は西洋（ギリシャ）と東洋（中国）において、恐らく、先人たちの膨大な時間と試行錯誤（人命の犠牲を含む）を経て各種疾病に効果のある薬用植物とその物質の発見とその利用に至ったと思われます。しかも古来、これは祈祷師や宗教とも絡まって。まさしく人類の歴史は薬用植物との関わりの歴史でもあります。
Since ancient times, both in the West (Greece) and in the East (China),the development of pharmacology and medicine has been identified to result in the discovery and utilization of medical plants and their substances considered as effective for curing various diseases. The process has been brought forth through a great deal of time and with trial and error (including the sacrifice of human lives) by our predecessors. Besides, they had been deeply related to shamanism and local religions. The history of mankind can also be expressed as the history of our relationship with medical plants.
西洋医学はこの1〜2世紀の間に使用する薬の大部分を化学薬品に置き換えたり、新たな化学薬を開発したりしましたが、それでも現在、その起源が薬用植物であるものは優に過半数を占めています。
During recent one or two centuries in modern Western Medical Science, most of the pharmaceuticals have been replaced and are newly developed by chemical medicine. In spite of that fact, more than half of these new medicines are still from medicinal plant as their origin.
薬用植物は現代医学の病気に本当に効くの？
薬用植物の効能を成分別に単離する技術が生まれその成分は１７項目ほどであったので、それぞれの成分について薬効を調べてみると、「その通りであること」がわかりました。下記はその一部です。
Are medical plants really effective to cure modern diseases?
Really? Components of general medical plants are roughly 17 if they were isolated from each other and medical effects of each of them are “valid” as shown below.
Starch & Inulin 肥満防止、便通改善、血糖値抑制
Triterpene glycoside, Steroid, Saponin 腫瘍、アレルギー、膠原病、肺炎
Kauchuk 蓄膿、不眠、ストレス
Plant pigment アンチエイジング
Tannin 癌、動脈硬化
Lignan Lignin 更年期障害
Glycoside 抗生物質
Alkaloid 癌の標準薬品
Etc.
2. 何故医薬原料の半分が無くなってしまう？
ではなぜそのような危機に瀕しているのか？ 原因の８０％が直接人間に起因するものなのです。
① 森林の伐採
② 土地開発 ：池沼、河川、海岸、湿地、草地の開発、土地の造成、道路工事
③ 園芸採取
④ 自然環境の変化
I understand that more than half of present medicines are from medicinal plants as origin. Then, why medicinal plants are at edge of extinction? 80% of factors of extinction are originated directly by human beings with their actions as below.
① Deforestation
② Development of lands: ponds, swamp, rivers, coast, wetland, land reclamation, road construction, etc.
③ Collection of plants for buying and selling.
④ Natural transition such as climate changes has influenced and has resulted indirectly in the possible extinction of plants.
III 討議したこと 人間の責任は重大！
各メンバーの意見
Aさん 人類は、自然のお陰で長い時間を共に生きてきたと、この事実を心に留めて、自然に接する気持ちが大事と改めて思った次第です。
Bさん We need to seriously realize, however, that changes are taking place also for the worse, due to human nature or selfishness, on many other things which human beings have been enjoying as a matter of course for many centuries.
Cさん I think we must save our environment more seriously to stop extinction of plants.
Dさん We cannot afford to waste our more time and resources in such acts of war as taking place presently in Ukraine and Gaza. We must consider in the fashion mentioned as above. Our primary consideration should be to preserve, protect, and defend our mother nature (as well as the Constitution).
Eさん 人間はこの地球における生態系においては、その頂点にいるとも言えるかもしれないが、Humans are the biggest threat to the planet.という言葉も警告として捉えなければならないと思う。
Fさん 上記人間の生存のための行為が自分達自らの生存を脅かすという皮肉な現実を認識する時、我々の罪深さと自然のサイクルの保全をいかに調和させるかの知恵と具体的方策の確立が無ければ我々自身も絶滅する他なしと思われる。
When we recognize the ironic reality that our various actions for survival threaten our own survival, we must establish wisdom and concrete measures to harmonize our sinfulness with the preservation of the natural cycle, or we ourselves will become extinct.
Gさん As a responsible ruler of the earth, we have to protect other species - discovered or not – from extinction by ourselves or mankind. Because these benefitable species will continue surely to bring bright future for mankind.
Hさん SDGｓ is vital for a countermeasure of the issue of plant extinction.
E-News & Songs Songs リーダー 藤本靖
3月の英語の例会の後、今年最初のOldies をKG同窓会館から徒歩５、６分のカラオケ館で開催しました。今回から、新しいメンバーSさんも参加されました。
初めに、EdelweissとQue Sera Sera を喉鳴らしのため全員で歌いました。
後はそれぞれのメンバーが用意してきた曲をビールやソフトドリンクを飲みながら楽しく歌いました。
昨年8月に亡くなられた、佐藤さんを偲びBluegrassのRelease me, CarpentersのTop of the Worldなど, 人生を顧みるMy Way, これからの楽園ハワイからBlue Hawaiiなど１時間３０分を明るく楽しみました。
最後は、新しく参加されたSさんの提案で、Last Waltzを全員で歌い解散しました。
